SherbeT {shur'bit}

I couldn't get the color scheme of sherbet out of my mind when working on a recent diptych…Sherbet ….Sixties…Sweet…Innocent…Young...

Inspiration from a generous friend who gifted me a slew of treasures including sewing patterns {Thank You Norma and Tam} followed by a couple of Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks published in the early 60's bought at a local flea market when visiting family…

Explorations of the early 60's…Memories of our family routines that are so different from today…I'm not sure there is a person out there who could keep up with our parents' schedules… I can't...

Comforting rituals…..more to follow in this series!

Abstract Figures

An UPDATE!!!
Published in the May/June issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine!  Prints are available here!
YaY!!!
:)

I've been working...and working...& did I say...working?

I'm developing a new series here ... yes, a series:  a number of related or similar objects

"Aria":  an elaborate melody sung solo with accompaniment, as in an opera or oratorio

I say..."yes, a series:  a number of related or similar objects" because I think I may...did I say MAY?....ok...I definitely have commitment issues...

"Eclipse":  a reduction or loss of spender, status reputation

However....this new series of mine which I call "Wallflowers"  is so exhilarating to me....

"Ebullience":  high spirits; exhilaration; exuberance
that it doesn't feel like a commitment at all....rather, a pleasure...a study...an experiment...

"Luminous":  radiating or reflecting light; shining; bright

I am looking forward to sharing more....

"Surrender":  to give (oneself) up to some influence, source, emotion

and reading your comments on this journey....

"Wanderlust":  a strong, innate desire to rove or travel about

On My Easel

Progressing along on this piece...

I always think it's interesting to review your art through the camera lens.

Another perception....
Different focal points sometimes emerge...

What do you see?

Alphabe -Thursday "C" is for CLASS at Art and Soul Retreat

Returned from Hampton, VA's Art and Soul Retreat yesterday....pheWWwww!!!  Crammed alot of wonderful stuff in my brain, in my truck, under my fingernails (there's still paint to be removed).  I can't wait until next year to return!  So many awesome opportunities for learning from the "rock stars" of this art niche.  I've included the link above and here it is again so you can check for future retreats:  ART & SOUL

Today, I'm sharing class #1with Serena Barton "The Forgiving Medium"
How serendipitous that I received my Cloth, Paper, Scissors magazine right before departing for this trip, which featured, guess who?...Serena Barton!  Well, of course I had to get her autograph:)

These beautiful portraits were our "class samples".  Very cool seeing them up close and personal.  But first we started with a still life...
I never do still lifes (note to self :  never say never)

Serena demonstrated her technique using an apple.  Sorry - I got no pics, but can tell you it was SO interesting watching her use of color (BTW - all acrylics and mediums in this class) and glazing/layering techniques impasto style and old world style...all with NO initial drawing.  Just plop the paint on your paper in the general shape and build it up from there  really paying attention to highlights and shadows...
Here's my apple outcome

Serena supplied canvas paper and had lots of paints to share.  We painted our apples first and the background after which is the opposite of what I normally do.  It's easier to refine the shapes with the background color as there is NO pre-drawing.  One of the best "tips" I learned from Serena is using the background to make the focal point POP!  I have a tendency to have the background and focal point competing and never really used dark backgrounds...so pleased to learn what a huge difference this makes.

Sadly, I still have not finished my "portrait" part of the class, but here she is in the works:

We followed the technique described in her article.  Serena starts with color for portraits - violets, blues or greens...and builds layers upon layers from there.  Pencil work does not come in until later in her portraits which was challenging, but what fun!  It really forces you to STUDY the subject you are creating.

I could go on and on, but I have a bazillion art supplies to unpack and a portrait or two to finish up before I forget what I learned...

Linking up to JENNY's Letter "C" Day - it's been awhile! - and must explore other alpha posts that you can find

Next post will be on Sally Jean Alexander's soldering class...mama mia!!!

Scrap Love for PPF

Remember this Journal spread from a couple of posts ago?...
an accumulation of leftover paints from other projects...

Well...I dug into my little "scrap box" of leftover bits n pieces to continue the "recycle" process...

More Stamping (Staz-On Ink Pads)....And Gluing (UHU stick and Golden Soft Gel Matte)...
and Doodling (Sharpie Poster Paints, Inktense Watercolor Pencils, Graphite) ....

Very relaxing...no rhyme or reason to it....

So interesting to watch all the layers come together....
I could keep probably empty the scrap bin easily....

I like it so much, I don't think I can bear to write in it!  Maybe a little more doodling though...or Glitter????...oil pastels?.....
Think I'll start another spread....

Paint Party Friday 2

Wednesday, I posted a canvas I began...

Acrylics, stamps, lots of various papers including maps, telephone pages and scrapbook paper ripped for the rough edge..
As of last eve, here's the progress.... pardon the ever present glare I always get with early morning photo's on the desk...

More of the same materials mentioned above...added some napkins because I love the translucency and experimented with conte crayons on the skin tones.  Initially, I really loved the way they blended, but the more I worked with them, the less "blendable" they became.  Still trying to figure that one out, but even so, will definitely try them again ...perhaps on paper next round.

One last photo with some digital elements applied....and I will leave you to explore and or join in on other paint parties by clicking on the link below:)

What's on Your Workdesk Wednesday? Week 63

Joining Julia at the Stamping Ground here for WOYWW Week 63.

Have a few works in progress from my latest obsession -  online art classes from two of my favorites:   Pam Carriker   &   Sharon Tomlinson

I've mainly used colored pencils for my faces in the past, so I'm learning lots about paints, brushes, pencils, etc.   Whew!

Both classes are challenging and fun!  Each have excellent instructions and different methods of painting so I feel like I'm getting the best of two worlds not to mention the convenience of hopping online whenever and learning at your own pace....

Don't forget to visit Julia here and check out lots of Workdesks!

Guarding A Garden Gate

Needed to spiff this guy up with some new paint, a new message (Even a bad day of fishing is better than a good day of work), and a special glittery heart tattoo to make me smile!
